Different Tools Used when Applying Haku

Many of the tools we use to apply Haku are made of dried bamboo. The most important thing when using Haku is that it stays completely away from moisture or any kind of grease including that of hands. Bamboos are very familiar to the Japanese and can be used for many purposes. When it has become greasy, we apply talc on them.

  Bamboo Tongs

One example is bamboo tongs. When applying multiple sheets of very thin gold leafs. They are very useful.

  Bamboo knife

Another tool that is made of bamboo is the knife we use to cut Haku. We can either buy it at an art supply shop or just get a piece of bamboo, cut it into a preferred length and size, and sharpen the edge with another cutlery.

  Bamboo Cylinder

Cylindrical shaped bamboo pieces are used when sprinkling Haku powders over different items. This can be substituted by something different as long as it’s dry.
